If Your Father Had Hair Loss, Will You Have It Too?
Hair loss is a condition when excessive amounts of hair start falling from the scalp. This may result in baldness if left unchecked and untreated. It can affect both men and women, though it is more common in men.
What causes this hair loss among men and women? There can be a number of reasons like stress, environment, heredity, medications, hormonal imbalance, deficiency, surgery etc. which result in hair fall. Among all the above given factors heredity or genetics is the most common reason of hair loss in men.
So if your father suffered from hair loss, will you have it too?
The answer could be yes and no. While at 28 you experience hair loss or baldness, your twin brother may not. This is the complexity of the genes. While it’s still not very clear how genes pass through the generation but the fact they do remains true.
In genetic hair loss, balding occurs not due to the falling of hair but due to body’s inability to produce more hair. The defective gene interferes with the normal hair growth cycle. The hair follicles complete their normal 25 cycles in a very short time span, thereby causing the follicles to stop producing hair.
In other words, in genetic hair loss the ANAGEN phase is shortened giving less time for hair growth while the TELOGEN phase is lengthened causing more hair follicles to be in resting phase. With less growth in the ANAGEN phase your hair will look thinner giving the appearance of a receding hair line. The receding hair line gradually gives way to large patches of baldness especially at the center of the head. It is therefore sometimes referred to as male pattern baldness.
Although genetic hair loss in women is not very common but there are women who get affected by this condition. The main reason for this type of hair fall in women is the hormone androgen which influences the natural hair growth cycle in women.
Though genetic hair loss is the worst type of hair loss resulting in total baldness, it is not incurable. Today there are a lot of treatment options available to men and women suffering from hair loss due to heredity reasons. Treatment includes a range of options from medicines to surgery. Thus with the advancement in medical science one can live a normal life free from ridicule.
