Hair loss is a common problem affecting men, women and children alike. Since hair form an essential component of our identity, people generally get very anxious about their hair loss treatment. There is a tendency among them to seek a cure of their problem as hurriedly as possible that they go without first determining the cause of their problem.
Since all hair loss cases are not the same, treatment differ from person to person. The underlying cause plays an extremely important role in determining the possible treatment. Heredity and hormonal imbalance are the most common causes of hair loss among people. However hair loss can also be an unwanted outcome of a major surgery. Hair loss after surgery mainly occurs due to the physical stress caused by the surgery.
While hair loss from surgery or hair loss after a major surgery is temporary and can be cured by medicines, hair loss that is inherited is permanent and surgery can be considered to treat this type of hair loss.
Hair loss surgery involves three kinds of surgical options:
- Hair transplantation surgery: In hair transplantation surgery the surgeon takes strong and healthy hair follicles from the back of the head and replants them over the balding areas. Although a slow process it gives fairly good results as the scalp gives the appearance like you have a full head of hair.
- Scalp reduction: Scalp reduction involves removing large areas of bald scalp from the head. Sections of the scalp with growing hair are then stretched and sewn together to fill in the bald areas.
- Scalp flaps: this involve moving a large section of scalp containing hair from the side and back of the scalp to a bald area. One side of the flap remains attached to the scalp as the section of scalp with hair is moved to cover a bald area.
Hair loss surgery though is a useful tool for the permanent treatment of hair loss; it is not devoid of side effects. There is a risk in hair transplantation surgery, that not all follicles will remain healthy. It can lead to thin and dry hair. Sometimes it may cause irritation of the kind of chicken pox on the scalp. However the complication involved in scalp flap surgery is greater than any other surgical option. It can cause bleeding, scarring and infection after surgery.
Thus, you can consider surgery if your hair loss is inherited and not treatable with other medcines.
